Heavy rains cause floods, sinkhole near Penampang

KOTA KINABALU: Heavy rains continue to trigger floods in low-lying areas of the city and its neighbouring districts with the latest downpour on Thursday (June 12) causing a sink hole to emerge in a village in Penampang.
Warning signs have been placed near the sink hole along the Putaton-Kibambangan road not far from here.
Apart from some parts of the city facing flash floods, various roads and villages in Penampang are also affected by floods.
Vehicles can been seen submerged in floodwaters while many houses are also hit.
Villagers still choose to remain at home but some have to move to their relative's houses at higher ground.
According to the Sabah Fire and Rescue Department, an evacuation centre in Penampang has been activated though no one has been evacuated as yet.
The Kota Kinabalu City Hall has also activated its call centre to monitor the flood situations at its area.
Intermittent heavy rains have been hitting parts of Sabah over two weeks, resulting in flash floods at least once a week.
The situation is making it hard for the authorities to cope.
